Like many of you, we are still celebrating Christmastide at our house. So today we also want to wish you a blessed and merry 8th day of Christmas.
Word & Song passed a milestone just after midnight in the wee hours of January 1, 2023: our membership topped the 5,000 mark. In part, this happened because the folks at Substack chose to feature Word & Song on their home page over the past several days. We thank Substack for their recognition, but more than that we thank all of the subscribers who have joined us and continue to join us -- every week -- as we revisit good, beautiful, and true things that sadly have been relegated to the dust bin in our times. We hope that, like the Christmas message itself, our essays bring you tidings of comfort and joy in difficult times. That is always our goal, and we are drawing from a boundless "archive" of cultural and spiritual treasures, the lasting and timeless gifts of the cultural heritage of all mankind. There will be no "supply-chain" shortages at Word & Song!
And out of that bounty, as you all know, we choose a daily treasure and put it before anyone who would like to see it. Word & Song is a labor of love for us, but a labor it is. Doing a daily magazine takes time, a precious commodity for everyone. And to be able to offer live video events to all of our paid subscribers — such as the one we tested before Christmas, with the reading of "A Christmas Carol" — we will need to purchase a license allowing us to exceed our present limit of 100 participants. So we are asking your help to meet another goal, that of reaching 500 paying subscribers, a “tithe” of our total number of subscribers. We are nearing that goal. I won't say just how close we are to 500, because that would spoil the fun, but we are closing in on that number.
To celebrate reaching our goal, we are planning a drawing for prizes, with a winner from of each of our three subscription tiers. We do know that not everyone can afford to pay to subscribe, so be assured that you don't have to pay to play or even pay to stay. All subscribers are automatically entered, and everyone has a chance to win. On the day after our paid membership tops 500, we will (figuratively) draw one name out of each of three “hats!”

Paid Subscriber Level
The winner will receive a complementary 6-month extension of his or her own subscription, a six-month paid subscription to give, and a signed copy of one book from the listed below.
