Big movie from the 50s. Very much a woman’s film with the Lancaster/Kerr and Clift/Reed relationships forefront. That scene on the beach caused one critic to wonder why they didn’t change the name of the film to “From Here to Maternity”.

Having seen the movie a number of times, I thought I knew it well, but your wonderful character analyses are calling me back for another viewing – thanks. What a cast, and not to mention smaller roles for Jack Warden, George Reeves, and Claude Akins!

I was wondering if anyone has read James Jones’ long novel. I imagine it had to be toned down some for the film.

One might also mention High Noon as another example of a man going it alone.
