You remind me yet again of another classic from the Hollywood studio era that I had not gotten around to watch - thank you.
And I did not realize that it was based on a story by Stephen Vincent Benet. I thoroughly enjoyed Benet's Faustian tale "The Devil and Daniel Webster," which he helped to adapt into a marvelous 1941 film with Edward Arnold and Walter Huston in the title roles.
Tony isn't as great a fan of musicals as I am, but he loves this one. And speaking of "The Devil and Daniel Webster," Tony and I both thought we had covered that film here at W&S, but evidently not. That's one for another day! Benet evidently had more than a few great stories to tell!
My choir teacher had us watch this in school a couple times over the years in the late 90s or early oughts. It was a smart choice for adolescent boys who enjoyed the fighting and competition.
I kept trying to get that movie but it only kept going to Mario Lanza’s singing.
