Yes, yes, yes, YES! Love today’s post and all the comments. I too had songbooks in Catholic grade school. Sister was brilliant. She had us take out our books in the 20 minutes before lunch. “I had an old mule and her name was Sal…..15 miles on the Erie Canal.” Singing was a great way to pass the time and take our minds off our stomachs.

My very next thought? Olfaction! There’s a certain school lunch smell. Kind of goulashy. The smell of warmth and safety and learning.

Late to the party today, but so happy to have had this in my inbox. Thank you Deborah et al. I love my Saturday people.

Your words bring back so many memories. You may recall that in The Music Man, Robert Preston as Harold Hill lists many composers/band leaders -"Gilmore, Pat Conway, WC Handy and John Phillip Sousa". Unfortunately that's where I learned of Gilmore's name, not in school. However, I fondly recall my primary school days as you do when we had a music period. We'd pull out the music books, the teacher might play as autoharp and we would select songs to sing. We also had a school choir and would put on a Christmas pageant and sing Christmas songs. How far we've come. I found a couple of copies of the music books we used in a used book store a while back. These were State of California text books. I pull them out periodically to reminisce. As Bob Hope would sing, Thanks for the memories - and for the blessing you are Prof. Esolen.
