On Monday, I included a couple of sentences from what’s really quite a moving article by the reformer and city-dweller, Jacob Riis, on “Wintertime in New York.” Today I’m reading more of the same article, focusing on children of all ages and their play. I notice a couple of things: the sheer freedom of the streets, the true spirit of democracy, the go-ahead for boys to be boys, and the heart of the reformer himself, who enters into the people’s games with a will. I hope you enjoy it!
