As a child I never saw the scenes that built up the soul of young Wordsworth. Yet I have not one memory of the natural world that is anything but a comfort to me.
Revisiting old entries in W&S and stumbled upon this. It caused me to go back in my memory to my youth and how I spent my days outdoors. What a treasure this poem is! And the comments! I have actually tried, recently, to start little discussions about my generation's gifts as children. A childhood friend made the comment that they were the happiest days of her life and that had me reflecting on little memories of dusty summers and glorious fall weather and the adventures we had. This poem says what I often felt but had no words to describe.
Thank you, Dr. Esolen. Under your inspiration, I am rediscovering poetry, and especially William Wordsworth. I've recently enjoyed his sonnet, "Speak!" and another of his poems, "The Perfect Woman."
Thank you! If you've ever seen the old show Rumpole of the Bailey, you'll know that Wordsworth was old Rumpole's favorite poet, and he quoted him from memory all the time. Imagine having such works and the thoughts and feelings behind them as part of your own treasury... Priceless.
That's wonderful to hear, Mark. Even with working on W&S every day we can only scratch the surface of that vast treasure trove we are drawing from. And I won't let the sun go down on me today without reading "The Perfect Woman," which I have not read. I will make sure that my husband sees your comment, which will cheer him mightily.
It is difficult to describe my gratitude for your wonder filled teachings and your touching poetry. My heart and soul have been thirsting for the drink you offer. Thank you so much dear brother. You are a true blessing.
Dear Rosalyn -- Your words cheer my heart. Every day I take a glance at social media, and it's all full of recrimination, bitterness, slander, backbiting, glee in somebody else's discomfiture -- some sociality THAT is! But here at Word and Song, we get to be human again ....

Thank you so much for sending this our way.
Reminds me of a character in a George Macdonald novel……🥰

The moon belongs to everyone,
The best things in life are free.
The stars belong to everyone,
They gleam there for you and me.
The flowers in spring, the robins that sing,
The moonbeams that shine, they're yours, they're mine.
And love can come to everyone,
The best things in life are free.
Exactly! And this is just such a sweet old song!
Just lovely.
This was so beautiful, such a comfort. Thank you.
