So help me, I often hear songs without comprehending the lyrics. I had no idea this sing concerned an actual doghouse, complete with dog.

Here's a song which is not about a dog, but a little boy. We first heard it as we were driving home from the animal shelter with the little cat who might as well have been a little dog. The song made us smile then, and the cat made us smile for fourteen unforgettable years.

And still smiling, though he has returned to his Maker.😊

Yes, I hear that Rock Around the Clock connection. I also love that echo of the band members singing which reminds me of some great big band tunes. Classic country tune with lament, love, and a favorite dog (or sometimes a truck).

Yes, Louise, those band members echoing the lyric IS reminiscent of Big Band style. That touch may have come from Fred Rose or Red Foley. Rose and Roy Acuff wanted hit songs and great music. They got it in Hank Williams!

The affinity of “Rock Around the Clock” with “Move It on Over” is unmistakable. Thanks for pointing it out, Debra!

This song is all of the above. It is sad man lamenting having to sleep with his dog instead of his lover. But the man is so sad he's mocking himself and the beat and melody of the song is upbeat. The man doesn't think he will be sleeping with his dog for long. But the man admits he isn't too wise so sleeping with his dog could be a long term relationship.

Thanks for sharing! Put a smile on my face this morning.

i love the juxtaposition of upbeat music with dark lyrics. the late Warren Zevon excelled at this as does Tomas Kalnoky in his projects Streetlight Manifesto and Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution.

. . . oh and Kalnoky also records acoustic solos under the name Toh Kay. perhaps the easiest way to start listening to him.
