I love this movie a lot but I'm confused about why Tony said on twitter

"the finest film I know on keeping the marriage vow in spite of all sorrow:"

I see it as the marriage vow being kept and the wife doesn't end up walking out only because of the possibility of a new child being adopted, which washed away the sorrow.

Is there something I'm missing?

I’ve never seen a movie like this. Thank you so much for sharing. I’ve never watched a movie that gutted me without violence and horror in it. The acting was impeccable, the music was perfect, the story was real. It was such a real experience told in such a masterful way. Applejack teaching the new Mom how to bathe her baby is a moment every mom has had. Truly a stunning movie.

Madeleine, I introduced Tony to this movie shortly after we met. He'd never seen it and fell immediately in love with it. I'd seen it over and over and over on TV movie shows as a kid growing up. It's one of my favorite movies ever. <3

Yes, such a good movie. and how it uses music tied to memories rings so true.

The film makers in those days could count on the audience to recognize a host of songs and musical compositions. Composers of film scores had endless sources of music to bring in when they wanted to evoke a mood IN THE AUDIENCE. And yes, old songs do bring back memories .. if the songs are memorable.

Sounds amazing! And what a concept: a beautifully - rendered story, about the magnificent institution of matrimony. I suspect that Hollywood hasn't the energy, the will, or the conviction to do that anymore. Could it be that movies were better, esthetically as well as morally, under the Hayes Code?

All of the above, I am afraid. The falling off is undeniable.. but by now such movies can't be made because they wouldn't attract audiences. It's sad.
