I don’t know what it is about Lancaster but he dominates the screen, in every movie, in a way I’ve never seen. Might not have the charm and humor and relatability of some other actors, but just *the* absolute movie star.

Frankenheimer and Lancaster made the best WW2 film in my opinion ever produced - The Train. Burt is an underground French resistance fighter who must prevent painting masterpieces from being taken by the Germans out of France just before the Allies take over. Many men die in the process of saving these works of art. The movie ends with the camera going back and forth between the many hostages on the train slaughtered by the Germans upon their realization that they are about to be defeated and the masterpieces the Germans now abandon.
