Isaac Watts (1674–1748). We believe what Jesus has said to us, when he promises to us the kingdom of God. “This day,” said he to the repentant thief beside him on the cross, “you shall be with me in paradise.” It is the passage from here to there that frightens us. But let us look at the matter, says Watts. The land beyond is where “saints immortal reign.”
I saw this hymn title by Dr. Watts a few weeks ago while reading a short biography by Douglas Bond, titled “The Poetic Wonder of Isaac Watts”. My search for the lyrics with any tune proved fruitless until today. Thank you.
Oh! I remember singing this hymn as I grew up and sang in the junior choir at Christ Church (Episcopal) in Alexandria VA. It seemed to me at that time that about half the hymns in the 1940 hymnal were composed by Watts. Now a Roman Catholic, I miss singing some of those beloved hymns although a few are still in our hymnal.
Delight-- the daughter of hope.
