I am nostalgic for singers who could sing! And whose songs were worth hearing. Thanks for running this one!

I believe this song is about a man who has reached his wit’s end and has nobody to turn to besides God. He is pleading with God and supplicating Him, begging for God’s grace to be upon his circumstances.

It sounds like there is a slight difference between the two renditions. Although my hearing may not be accurate, the original version seems to say “who will I turn to if you delay?”, while the Tony Bennett version says “who will I turn to if you turn away?”

I prefer the former rendition because it underlines the urgency and immediacy of the need. We all have a need to be in communion with God, and to remain in His good grace. This is not a need we will have someday, or just at the moment of death, but rather, right here and right now.
